Pickerington Lakeview Junior High Band Handbook 
Dear Band Members and Parents:
We would like to welcome all students to the Pickerington Lakeview Junior High School Band Program. You are part of a traditionally exceptional organization here in Pickerington. In the past, the Junior High Band Program has performed at many events and competitions, including Youth Arts Month in downtown Columbus, local health care centers, Children’s Hospital, and the Music in the Parks festivals. Hundreds of Pickerington band students have been involved in OMEA contests and have received superior and excellent ratings over the years. We are excited to begin our future at Pickerington Lakeview Junior High, and to achieve new goals which will earn our school the reputation of excellence.
It is the goal of the band program at Pickerington Lakeview Junior High to give students the opportunity to express themselves in a manner not provided in any other subject area. The band is a place where students who work hard can excel and achieve satisfaction with whatever talent he or she might possess. It provides an area where students can find rewards both musically and socially, both of which are important at any age level. It is our goal that students also become life-long learners and supporters of the arts as a result of their involvement in the junior high music program.
The band program at Pickerington Lakeview Junior High is open to those students who have completed their instrumental music classes at the 6th grade level. Pending special circumstances of new students, parents and the director may determine necessary private lesson instruction in order to prepare for our groups. Students who chose to take private lessons in lieu of the band class must first complete an audition for the music staff before admittance in our groups.
It is important to have open communications between the school and the home. By working together, we can provide the best educational climate for our children. General Conduct and Classroom Rules The good conduct of each member of the band is necessary for a well-functioning group with a good reputation. All school policies must be adhered to at all times.
1. Be on time and prepared for all practices and performances. Display proper posture and self-discipline, watch and listen to directors, and ask questions at the appropriate time.
2. No food, gum, candy or drinks are allowed in the band room facilities. We have a beautiful new building, and it is our job to keep it looking beautiful.
3. Place your instrument, with case latched, on the space assigned to you, and the folder in its assigned slot.
4. Name tags on the outside of each instrument case are required.
5. No one is to play another student’s instrument. No one is to play any school-owned equipment without the director’s permission.
6. Students may practice during a study hall or lunch with a pass from one of the directors.
7. Students are to ask permission before entering the directors’ office. Students are not allowed to use supplies or the telephone in the directors’ office without permission.
Performance Dress Code All band students must wear their music shirt, black dress pants, black socks, and black closed-toe shoes (no tennis shoes) for all performances and other specified functions. Failure to do this will result in a 0 for that performance, and the student will not be permitted to perform.
Attendance Policy
All conflicts with the band schedule shall be handled on an individual basis with the directors. A band member may be excused from a performance using two methods:
A. Written Notice: This must be given to the directors two weeks in advance. This notice must be signed by the student’s parents, and the directors have the right to refuse or question the validity of the excuse. B. Emergency Situation (examples listed below) 1. Death in the family 2. Personal illness resulting in missing school the day of the performance Other reasonable conflicts will be considered and discussed with the director prior to or directly after the performance. Examples of unexcused absences are: 1. You have no ride and knew ahead of time. (Mrs. P will help you find a ride or drive you herself!) 2. You forgot. 3. You have too much homework 4. You have to babysit. An unexcused absence will result in a 0 for that performance. Each performance is regarded as a test grade for that grading period. We are a team, and if one person fails to attend, the entire group suffers. Pending special circumstances, a student may be asked to complete an assignment in order to earn back points lost. Supplies Needed For Class All students must come to class prepared. The following items need to be in your case every class period: Flutes: Cleaning swab and rod Clarinets/Oboes/Saxophones: Cleaning swab, cork grease, three working reeds with colored stickers Trumpets/Horns/Trombones/Baritones/Tubas: Cleaning cloth, valve oil, slide grease Percussion: Practice pad and drumsticks The following items need to be with you at the start of class: Instrument in working condition Music Pencil Each student must have their music each class period, regardless of who you may share your stand with. Band Officers Students may run for the following offices: Secretary, Treasurer, Librarian, Section Leader, and Manager. Each class period needs one of each type of officer. Band directors have the final word in the election of band officers.
The secretary’s duties include assisting the director with attendance, recording information and collecting homework and practice records.
The treasurer’s duties include collecting and recording any money taken in during the school year. This included money for reeds, valve oil, etc.
The librarian’s duties include making copies of materials needed for class, assisting students with music, filing music, and coordinating files in the music library.
The manager’s duties include assisting the director with equipment needed for assemblies and concerts. Managers assist before and after all performances with set-up and tear-down of chairs, stands, percussion equipment, etc.
The section leader’s duties are to assist the directors with audio evaluations and the selection of Student of the Week. They also assist the librarian with issuing new band music for their section. They may be asked to assist the treasurer with the collection of funds. Grading and Evaluation Policy
Students will be evaluated on several areas. These include attendance, individual evaluations, practice records, preparedness for class, and daily participation.
Attendance: Any unexcused absence will result in a 0 for that rehearsal or performance. Please see the attendance policy for more details.
Individual Evaluations: Each student will be asked to perform a selection in person or by tape for the director each grading period.
Practice Records: Each student must practice a minimum of ninety minutes each week. Practice records are due on the last day of each week. These must be signed by both the student and parent.
Preparedness for Class: Students who forget their instrument or music will receive a 0 for that day. If the instrument is in the repair shop, a note from home will be needed to avoid receiving 0s for every day it is not in class.
Daily Participation: Students automatically receive 5 points for every day that they are in class. Points can be lost for misbehavior, gum/food/candy in class, off-task behavior, etc.
Tests/Quizzes: Students will be tested throughout the school year on different musical concepts, such as music vocabulary, enharmonic spellings for notes, etc.
